George Winslow Memorial Regatta - 26 July, 1200

Note the time change for the first warning...1200 vice 1300! The CHNYC George Winslow Memorial Regatta is two weeks away. Three races with spinnakers, beginning at 1200. The earlier start will allow racers more time to return to their moorings and make it to the post race party at the Navy base that begins at 5PM. Your entry fee is covered as part of the racing fees for Shields Fleet 9. As in the past, if need be you can show and deliver your entry to the RC or mark boat on the water. If you can get me the names of those racing by noon on Friday, 25 July, I will ensure they have access at Gate 1 at the base on Saturday. Chris Withers finished his last race yesterday

Our friend, competitor, and reigning Fleet 9 Champion, Chris Withers, passed away yesterday, December 27. Chris steered Envy #138 to many a victory, much to the frustration of those of us who assumed that because we were younger we could beat him. He also had great success with the Navy boats for years before he got Envy, winning the Shields Nationals in 1983. His wife, Donnis, and four children survive him.

Oh boy, the last race of the season, five boats in the hunt for the season series, 20 knots from the southwest, and a good-sized fleet on deck. The start was set just east of Rose Island, with a beat against a strong flood tide to Hammersmith, back to a leeward gate by the bridge and a short beat to the finish. We’d brought our whole crew (6 of us!) and felt fast in the warmup; the tough question was whether to sail up to the Fort and short tack the shore from there, or to hit the righthand corner hard, a move that’s been working all season but didn’t seem such a sure thing with the breeze truly southwest (a little bit right of some nights) and a stronger breeze and flood tide.

Robin, Fun, Dan, and company set a good long starting line but we still managed to arrive late in a congested part not far from the weather end. The gun sounded with us sucking bad air in the second row behind Jay Gowell in 232 alongside Chris Withers in 138. Both of us tacked after a minute to clear our air and found a good lane going over to the Cone of Rose Island, but as we came up past the green can, 138 started pinching us off and we had to take a clearing hitch.

Here we made mistake number 2: Our angle on starboard looked good, aiming up past the Fort, and it seemed as if we had the bulk of the fleet to leeward in good control, so rather than tacking back with Chris to the right, we sailed back to the left side and soon proved (again, I think, because I’ve tried this once or twice before) that you can’t play both sides of this particular beat. Our angle got a little worse and the boats coming out past the Fort got the current relief they’d been seeking. Soon we were into the ping pong tacking game, just past the Fort, and watching 217, 145,and 74 forge ahead. Only 2 or 3 boats can play that game comfortably, and we weren’t going to be one of them. And now here came Chris out of the right corner, comfortably in about third place, along with Andy Burton in 201, maybe in sixth.

Things deteriorated from there for us, almost hitting the mark with Chuck in 202 alongside grumbling that we’d finished our tack inside the two length circle; then I pulled a surprise jibe on the crew and we had a really most excellent spinnaker snafu for the first few minutes of the run. (I take all the credit for that!)

But…looking on the bright side, it was a beautiful breeze on a beautiful night, and it’s been a fun season of good competition and time spent on the water. Reed, Rachel, Matt, Pete, and Ted have been consistently aboard 107 with me, keeping us going fast and handling the sails really well. Also, based on a review of the scores, I think I’m going to have to share the tiller with some of them more next year.

Overall, our fleet seems stronger than ever—just ask Pete Denton in 226 how easy it is to win the Nationals and then come back and get no respect on Wednesday nights. And we have new boats such as 17, 76, and 108 who are only going to get faster next year.

Congratulations to Nicole and Bill on 74 on winning the Wednesday night season series; according to Nicole, they almost didn’t sail last night’s race; they were sailing around the anchorage under jib alone looking for a fourth crew to pick up, and they found one. Ted on 145 sailed an excellent season—and Nationals—as did Chris on 138. I think our fleet captain, Andy Burton, may have made the biggest improvement over last season and got some silverware for it. Nice going, Andy. We’ll see you in Right Cornersville next spring.

The Sail for Hope is our last race of the season go to www.sailnewport.org for details. It counts for the Kendall Cup and raises money for a good cause so let's get a bunch of Shields out.

The hoist at Sail Newport will be open 9-5 seven days a week so we can get our boats out.

Next Wednesday is our last evening race. We'll try to get two races in to make up for this week but with the shortening days; no promises. Anyway, we will have FREE BEER and PIZZA after sailing at Ida Lewis. Bring your crew and everyone's SO and celebrate a successful season of Fleet 9 racing. (It seems like just last week we had our first race of the season.)

Race Report for September 12^th, Fall Series

Wind out of 305 degrees at the start at 10 -12 knots velocity. Low tide was back at 2:31PM giving the fleet a strong flow South to North… point your bow at a mark and watch it walk around the clock. These boats figured it out:

24 Boats out on the course for this gorgeous evening, John Ghiorse would have given it a 9 out of 10 on his scale. On 76 we saw puffs coming from the right and set up to start on the committee boat end, along with a good crown of 59, 224, 201 and more…. It was a little discouraging to our boat when we approached the bouy at Rose Island to have a boat coming back at us to honor the mark so we guess the middle right was not as fast as the right side of the course. Interesting approach to the first weather mark, #17 (the red boat) did a port approach and stuck it in with a tack to lay the mark inside of two boat lengths… nice with no fouls. From our vantage on the left side of the first downwind ride the breeze was constant and we swept down on the tide which gave us a little heat for our angle into the right gate.

The second windward leg played out the same for us but the second downwind leg gave us a couple jibs forced by the wind going a little right and the tide continuing to push left.

On #76 we feel like the “new kids on the block” since we’ve only been in the boat about 6 weeks. Most of the guys are out of Etchells and we had some trepidations when we looked at this boat, that we might not “enjoy” the Shields experience… Those feelings have long gone under the keel! On the ride back to the mooring, settling back with a cold one, it was Paul Sollitto who summed it up, “boy, that was a fun race”. So on #76, we’re really enjoying the racing… and we like our new boat. I had prepped to do this race report, even brought a small recorder to keep notes… BUT I didn’t check the batteries, so this is the short version.

Fall Race 3 Post-Race Report from Shields #15

When we arrived at the dock, the wind was out of the SE at about five and the expectation was for light breeze and the need to hurry to get out to the course in time. As we gathered our stuff, however, the sea breeze arrived, with 10-12 knots inside the Navy marina. I thought of my conversation earlier in the afternoon with Chris Withers who was scheduled for race committee, and my comment it might be a good day to have RC duty. Not anymore, and picked up fifth crewmember for insurance. After the course signal was posted, we drove past the pin and caught an interesting sight, as Lime Rock (with the aforementioned CAPT Withers onboard), had wrapped their prop around the pin line while trying to drag it forward. Knowing Robin would have to postpone, we beat towards Goat Island to check out the current along the shore. While we noticed the current was ebbing already, the more important find was that the wind went progressively left, so we abandoned our plans to start at the boat end of the line and decided for a start closer to the pin. Just as well, because AP wasn’t up very long, we got caught upwind of the line, and by the time we got back to the pin there were only two minutes left in the sequence. Bill Doyle in 222 was even further upwind and barely got back in time. Fortunately we found a hole and tacked back onto starboard about 50 seconds before the gun and were able to keep our air clear before the start…well, other than Peter Clark in 224 who rode over the top of us about 15 seconds before the gun, but he was gone pretty quick. We had decent speed at the start and clear air (first time in a while at the pin end of the line). My crew noted the port-starboard encounter at the pin (believe between 101 and 53, though Chris on the mark boat thinks it was 217 vice 53) and the resounding bang, and when I glanced to see what the other boats were doing, a strange sight unfolded, as no less than 2-3 starboard tack boats ducked port tackers that were trying to clear their air…they really wanted the left side of the course like we did. We ended up getting pinned left by 53, but as we slowly were headed, we eventually were able to tack and cross them. Upon tacking, we noted Andy (Bang Hard Right) Burton in 201 was even further left than we were, so we figured we weren’t too bad off, although we appeared to be well overstood for the windward mark. After letting a little out of the bank (why do we keep doing that), about three quarters of the way up the course we got the bad news as we fell out of the lefty and the wind went way right and the boats on the right began to cross us. Fortunately, we at least made the Dumplings and went all the way to the rock along the shore inside Quebec. We tacked at the rock and leebowed 222 (sorry Bill, but crossing you wasn’t an option with the rock there). After clearing the rock, we tacked back for clear air and the starboard layline, and rounded with only two or three boats behind us. The run downwind was a good one, as we were able to team up with 188 ahead of us to gas Stubby in 59 and 21 and past them, and then we reached over 188 and pass them as the wind continued left, and then watched Stubby return the favor and ride 59 over the top of 188. We were back in the lefty we saw before the start and the first half of the first beat, so we settled on east gate since we were right already and that gate was further upwind. We had a great mark rounding, having clear air even with the ebb pushing the boats ahead of us upwind, held it for about five boat lengths until we found a clear lane and tacked. Then we found out fairly rapidly that it was a fetch to the finish (so the boats that went to the west gate ended up making out as they were less overstood…ugh!), and we lost several of the boats we overtook downwind. When it was all over we felt fortunate to put six boats behind us. Congrats to Bill and Nicole in 74, Chuck Allen in 202, and Dan Holloway in 127 for doing the best job of figuring out which way the wind was going and finishing top three, and to Bernie Patterson in 163 who put a Navy boat in the top half of the fleet for the third straight week. Can you believe it? This Wednesday marks the end of the Summer Series! That’s right, your sailing season is two thirds over; time to start looking for the lifting rings and lining up storage for the winter. To mark the occasion, there’s FREE BEER AND WINE AND FREE DINNER at Ida Lewis after sailing on Wednesday Night. That’s right, I said FREE! Come and give me grief for bringing the date to your attention! Bring your crew and SO. Reminder: Wed Aug 15 is the practice race for the Nationals. Partner Series Update 3

After four races in the Summer Series, the first throwout kicked in, and for the Partners Series scoring, the team of 163 and 138 unloaded a 26th and a 16 and moved into the lead (it didn't hurt that Capt. Withers won the race, too); but they were closely followed by 59 and 224, which both scored Top 10 finishes in Race 4.

The 127/201 team maintained a strong third position by throwing out a 32 and a 13 while combining Race 4 finishes in the Top 10 and Top 20. Previous leaders, 1 and 74 fell back to 4th, mainly because they’ve scored consistently about 28 points total, per race, and didn’t have any big throwouts to drop.

A refresher on the scoring; partners’ scores are based on the difference between combined average points from spring series racing versus summer series. Biggest negative change is the leader.

George Winslow Memorial Regatta 7/28/07 Results

Despite the forecast for light rain and possible thunderstorms, Saturday was a perfect day for racing with mostly sunny skies, and wind out of the south-south-west initially at 8-10 building to 12-14 by the completion of racing. John Bonds set the line just south of Gould and ran three long courses up to the Dumplings (two to Romeo, and one to Zulu) with a leeward finish. Conditions were tougher than expected for the skippers, with the forecast flood current never measuring up to the expectations of the skippers who played the Jamestown shore (I was one of them), and everyone wondering which side of the course to favor once they passed under the Newport Bridge. The boats that played the middle had either more pressure (though there was plenty on the Jamestown shore) or the remanents of the ebb (especially for the first race) and faired better. Andy Burton in 201 had a ton of speed and was just plain tough to catch, as he really legged it out in races that were about 65-70 minutes in duration. My thanks to everyone who came out, as fourteen boats made this largest turnout we've had in at least five years. Wednesday, July 25 Race to be Resailed

To the Fleet: As a result of a request for redress filed Wednesday night, Principal Race Officer Perry Lewis reviewed the results, procedures, and scoring from the race, consulted with the Ida Lewis protest committee, and determined that the race will be re-sailed. The Fleet Captain and Executive Committee have agreed with this conclusion. We will try for two races next Wednesday. Our thanks to Perry for making this quick determination, and to Perry and the rest of our race committee volunteers for continuing to offer their time to run our races. Attention Shields Fleet 9 Sailors: As you are no doubt aware Shields Fleet 9 is hosting the 2007 Shields Nationals on August 15th through the 18th. We expect as many as 12-15 boats from out of town. The visiting Shields will need places to moor or secure their boats at night. We are looking for open moorings near ILYC or people who are willing to allow a visiting Shields to raft up at night. Summer Series #4 — Report from Shields #138

As is his custom, Robin Wallace made the right decision to race despite the weather forecast and he handled the ship traffic very diplomatically. We felt very lucky to get the race in, win it, and not get drowned in the process, as was the case at ILYC after racing.

We had young George Winslow aboard who worked brilliantly with Ian MacKechnie, and they kept me going the right way. They saw better pressure on the left so we tended to favor that side. However, we played the shifts which were 10-15 degrees and went for pressure which was easy to see on the flat water, as the wind was puffy.

After one general recall, we had a decent start (for a change) in the middle of the line, even though we thought the pin was favored by 10 degrees. Three boats were over early, but two of them worked their way back to a top four finish.

Hope to see everyone out for the George Winslow Regatta on 28 July. The Navy will have John Bonds as PRO and he is excellent. Free party after racing on the base.

After three Wednesdays in the Summer Series, the team of Harold Belson (1) and Nicole Alio (74) has taken the lead in the experimental Partners Scoring series, which compares how each pair of partners does in the Summer Series vs how they did in the Spring Series. Consistency, not brilliance, has given 1 and 74 the lead, but that's usually the best way to win any long series.

The team of Dan Holloway (127) and Andy Burton (201) dropped from first to fourth after two races because 201 dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in a while and 127 didn't make the starting line.

Hanging in second, Bernie Patterson (163) and Chris Withers (138) had a decent evening, but moving up into a close third place was Victor Bell (71) and Charlie Shoemaker (245) finishing 11th and 10th.

The scores look like this (remember, a negative delta is good because it means your scores are getting lower). R1 means Race 1 and R2, Race 2. In the scores, "D" means DNC. The score on the far right, the Delta, is the difference in a team's average race score so far compared to the spring series. Whichever team scores the lowest delta wins.

Report from Shields #59, Lisa, Summer Series Race No. 3

Summer racing in Narragansett Bay is what keeps me going during the dark, cold days of winter. It’s all about the sun, the steady, warm southwesterlies, the sparsely populated waters of a late Wednesday afternoon. Odd how I never seem to remember the more challenging days like, oh, I don’t know, yesterday maybe?

Yesterday, our 30-boat fleet (thanks for that vast expanse of a well laid-out starting line Robin!) saw fog, current that shouldn’t still be kicking so hard, a 57,000-ton car carrier, and a dank, cool southeasterly. Of course I’d probably think it was a terrific night if we’d gone hard left on the first weather leg instead of chasing tendrils of stronger breeze in the middle/right. Can you believe how launched those left-handers were after only one leg? Obviously (well, now it’s obvious) there was considerable current relief on the left?-hand side of the course. Was it the fabled Rose Island Cone Effect? The crew of #202, Tom Glassie and Chuck Allen, rounded the weather mark in first, and were so far ahead we could barely make out which Shields it was from our position in the cheap seats. “The call was: ‘head for the fog’,” said Chuck this morning. “Then, on the downwind leg #107 took a flier and stayed on the east side of the racecourse. We decided to stay with the top five boats, which went west, instead of covering #107, and they got around us.”

The downwind leg was our chance to grind back some places, and we did. Instead of jibing directly after the weather mark, we stayed close to the War College, following #107, (note to John Burnham and Reed Baer: your team is even faster and smarter when the owners stay home). Team Grace, with Matt Buechner at the helm along with Rachel Balaban, Peter Schott, Ted and Rick Hood took the lead and never looked back. On #59, thanks to a steadier breeze, we were able to round the left-hand gate mark in a much better position than when we rounded the weather mark. As we were approaching the leeward gate, we noticed that Robin and his crew of stalwarts had upped the anchor on Ida and were headed upwind to finish the race by the weather mark, which, considering the visibility, was a great call.

Our tactical plan, and it was pure, inspired genius, natch, was to go left on what became the final weather leg. That call, combined with our effective downwind leg, allowed us to finish 13^th out of 30, which was a whole lot better than we would have done had the race ended at the leeward mark. #107 took the gun, followed by Tom Derecktor’s #17, which was stacked with industry talent and sailing fast, but was also un-registered and un-inspected, so the third boat to cross the line, #202, actually took second place. In third was #53. For the winner, the race took exactly one hour to complete. The last-placed boat finished 21 minutes later. Thanks to the crew of #232, who pulled RC duty last night, Robin’s crew on Ida, and the crew of Lime Rock.

The partner's scoring for the summer series is underway, and for those who have forgotten what it is, see the description earlier in the June part of this blog. (Basically, you and your partner are trying to improve on your average race score from the spring series.)

We have 13 teams competing, and unfortunately, 7 of them have recorded one or more DNCs, good for 36 points, which bloats their scores to say the least. C'mon guys! Get those boats on the starting line. Of the six pairs that have sailed both races, everyone has improved on their Spring scores (proof once again that showing up is more than half of the battle), and there's a close battle between the teams of Holloway/Burton in 127/201 and Patterson/Withers in 163/138. Running close by in third is Belson/Alio in 1/74.

Twice the Fun

Two races a night are lots more fun, in my opinion. We get one chance to go the wrong way then another to correct our mistakes.
Last Wednesday was no exception; we got out early on Raven and had a good look around the course and tried to guess where Robin Wallace would send us. We quickly found that there seemed to be a righty on the right side of the course and that the flood was much less than on the left. We decided we really wanted the right so went for a boat start with plans to tack immediately after we cleared the boat. A nice gap opened up as a few people arrived early and we nailed the start at the boat and tacked. Reed Baer on 107 tacked on our hip and we began a long port-tack board out towards Jamestown. We crossed ahead of a tug and barge that was shifting from pushing mode to pulling and tacked a liitle early so they wouldn’t block us when we wanted to come back. Reed kept going and was able to come down on top of us with eased sheets and rounded overlapped outside us; well ahead of the rest of the fleet except for our fleet measurer, Kim Roberts, we had a spinnaker wrap and held on just too long as 107 gybed and slipped by.
In the photos you can see the difference in the way the two boats fly the kites. I think 107’s way may be faster and they’ve really perfected the technique. I also think it should be illegal, but that’s beside the point. 107 went on to win the race and deserved to. They didn’t make any mistakes and capitalized on the two we made. Well done guys! Wasn’t there another fellow who sailed with you at one time, too? Perhaps he got the flick for missing too many races.
For the second race we decided—surprise—that we wanted the right again, even though the current was easing. The line was pin-favored, as the photos show, with Nicole Alio and Bill Shore on 74 crossing the fleet on port. But we were afraid of getting stuck over there; especially with so little runway to the war college there was a good possibility of getting pinged back and forth and going slow. So we planned to start late at boat again and bang right. We were about 6 seconds late with a lane to tack so we did. This time we had a bit more company but were able to get to the corner in good shape with Peter Clark on 224 ahead and well to leeward being a nice starboard blocker for us all the way in. We rounded third behind them and 74 and gybed immediately. We gained all the way down but not enough to get an overlap. The inside didn’t pay for Alio/Shore and we rounded second. We covered Chris Whithers on 138 as 224 put a loose cover on us to the finish.
Chris’s third place was enough to clinch the spring series for him on a three-way tie with us and Baer/Burnham who finished fifth in the race to take third for the series.
It’s interesting to look at the scores and see three boats with 13 points, two with 15, and two with 20 all in the top ten. That’s pretty close racing! It’s interesting, too, that if we include the throwouts, 138 and 201 are still tied and 138 still wins the tiebreaker. Cool! Well done, Chris and crew.

Race 3

Racing was excellent last Sunday (June 17) with 13 boats showing up to sail three no-spinnaker races in 10 - 15 knots of breeze. It was Father's Day so there were several boats with fathers sailing with their kids; Jay Gowell on 232 was one, John Burnham on 107 showed up with his entire family and so did Platt Johnson on 101 (of course Rachel Burnham and Nancy Johnson are Wednesday night regulars, too). The crew on 224 thought it was part of the Aloha Series and got style points for showing up in aloha shirts and with a bikini-clad crewmember soaking up the rays on the back porch on the runs. Bob Hunte ran the races on a good windward-leeward course between marks Q and 6. And contrary to everyone's expectations, with a swift ebb it wasn't a dash for the right hand corner, so the races were interesting with lots of lead changes. The last race was the most frustrating for Robin Monk on 160 who was launched at the weather mark only to sail into a hole downwind as the rest of us brought the breeze to him. A great time was had by all in the Corinthian atmosphere that prevailed. It made a nice change from the intense competitiveness of Wednesday nights.

Introducing the Summer Partners Series

Starting with the summer series, we're introducing an informal, unofficial, experimental and for-the-moment completely secondary scoring scheme for the Wednesday Night series. Partner teams are pairs of boats determined by pairing high + low scoring spring series boats. Since the spring series isn't technically over until the first of (hopefully) 2 races is held on June 20th, partners were scored based on their points through June 13th, with average points (for RC duty) applied to date. After the top and bottom scoring boats were paired, the next pair is the 2nd highest/2nd lowest scoring boats, and so on. Any boat that had more than one DNC didn't qualify to race in this series, but can easily qualify for the fall series by competing regularly in the summer. Here are the summer series partnerships and their spring series points.

For anyone who is confused by this, don't worry about it. Just call your partner on Mondays and make sure he or she has a full crew. Help them fix something or do some pre-race tuning. Share a few laughs. Any complaints should be addressed to the Czar of the Partners Series, whose email address will be made available sometime in November. All his decisions are final unless he changes his mind.

Dear Shields Fleet Nine Shields Owners, On July 7th and 8th 2007 a team of sailors from Kinsale Yacht Club in Ireland will be traveling to Newport to team race Ida Lewis Yacht Club (ILYC) in Shields. We are looking for 6 Shields owners to volunteer to lend their boats for these 2 days. As an incentive for these Shields owners, they will be invited to not only sail (or an appointed owners representative) but also attend the social party @ILYC on Saturday evening free of charge. ILYC member participants, boats owners, and volunteers in this event may also have the opportunity to travel abroad to Ireland and other countries in future team racing events. After last week's blow the grins in the bar were the widest I've seen and the decibel level was double the usual as excited crews told war stories. So I was disappointed to cancel this week for less breeze. In Europe or Australia there would be question of not sailing; are we getting to be wimps in the US? So questions for the fleet-- owners and crews; Should we have sailed last Wednesday? Should we have a "No Spinnakers" flag?

June 6 Race Report, and two more accounts

The first thoughts on arriving at the harbor were - Gee I hope they get a race off tonight, it looks awfully light. I have only been a part of Shields fleet 9 for 3 seasons and this is the most breeze I have ever sailed in on our Wednesday nights. I think that everyone on the water will have a story to tell about what went wrong and hopefully right. Certainly mother nature gave us a few challenges and showed once again who the boss is. I have included a few other folks thoughts so open a brew and relax.

Raja-101 got out about 30 minutes before the start and sailed most of the course. The boat felt good with the fifth crew member we had decided to enroll. Ben Quatromoni was our fordeck, Russel Miller trimmed the chute, Sam Howell did main and tactics and Andy Segal, the owner of Raja, trimmed jib and ran the pit. We felt good with five and thought we had better stiffness although it is a "lot" harder to see with that many onboard.

The start looked favored at the pin but a quick dial up at 2 minutes showed a favor to the windward end. We opted for a safe middle of the line start and managed to live just above John Dory-217's hip for a long tack out towards the dumplings. Most boats looked better on the right but by tucking up inside Dumplings gong we seemed to enjoy a bit of current relief. John Dory-217 who had tacked earlier with Chuck Allen on 202 and Bill Shore on 74 played it perfectly and extended their leads. We rounded 4th and had a good bit of separation on the rest of the fleet so we set our sights on catching 74 and 202. 202 slid to the right and played the leg well while we tried to get inside of Bill Shore at the end of the leg. Unfortunately the extra distance sailed plus Bill's experience still left us in 4th. Our rounding was not one of our best with the jib not all the way up, the main not tuned and the port jib car slipping. In addition we decided that the left was the way to go and forgot about playing the shifts. Result was we lost another 4 boats as 59, 138, 107 and 76 all beat us to the windward mark by playing the right side shifts and the cone of current relief from Rose Island. We rounded the windward mark and set our course to the right courtesy of a slow jybe. Once we were settled into the run we moved to the inside of 201 and then started dealing with the monster gusts. Russel did a great job of tuning the kite and Sam called the puffs so we could soak in the lulls with the kite rotated to windward and then ease the guy and trim the spinn sheet and main sheet to survive the gusts with a higher angle. It was an interesting leg as one kite after another blew up. We watched 107 execute a perfect 10 wipeout although we missed seeing their impromptu bottom scrubbing efforts. John elaborates on them further below. 202 also had kite issues although I am not sure exactly what they were as they tried to fly something for a while before giving up. We caught a few of these boats before our own spinnaker halyard parted at the head which was probably a good thing. We got to the leeward mark in 6th and rounded just behind 201 but with a narrow lane just to windward of his line again proving that Shields like a nice slow turn. Up the last leg we held 201 to the starboard layline by keeping just above them so that they couldn't tack. When we finally tacked for the RC boat, which was favored by quite a bit, we ended up catching 202 as well. After the race I debriefed a few folks who trounced us on the second leg. Andy MacKechnie on 138 said it was mostly good fortune that they played it correctly as they were really trying to free their air. When they tacked to starboard to make it around the red buoy off Rose Island Light they were on the layline with a nice righty. Sailing in clear air really does pay off although I suspect that the crafty Chris Withers meant to go that way all along. Bill Shore who stayed cool and collected just stayed perfectly in phase the entire 2nd leg while playing the right side. He credits a new deck mounted Plastimo Compass (just the parts with no plastic fittings) with making the shifts easy to read. His crew Curtis takes the credit for actually watching it and paying attention to it's rotations. Congrats to them on a well earned victory.

I want to thank Peter Gerard, who stepped in for Robin Wallace, and his excellent race committee team for a wonderful and memorable evening of sailing without whom we would just be the pretty boat cruising society.

I heard you were doing the writeup for last night's adventures. I thought I'd give you the inside scoop on how you passed us on the last run:
I tipped the boat over last night in a big gust of wind, and I went swimming. Our boat (107) was riding about 5th, most of the way down the second run, and smugly gaining on other boats that had blown out their chutes. The boat laid over to leeward quickly in the puff and, with the vang on, the boom self-trimmed as it hit the water and the boat laid over on its side. Perched to windward but trying to pull the tiller in my direction, I got pitched to leeward and stepped for the seat, but it was too vertical to hold me. Judging from the gash in my shin, I hit the coaming and the rest of me kept on going.
As I hit the water I remember thinking two things: 1) I'm glad I have my PFD on and 2) I'm not letting go of the tiller extension. I held on tight even as my body tacked violently under water from leftside forward to right; judging from how sore my right hand is today, I had a death grip on the extension and fortunately the universal joint held up, perhaps better than the joint in my right shoulder, which is a little sore this morning.
The boat slowed down dramatically (taking a big drink of the Bay in the process) and with my free left hand and forearm, I grabbed the toe rail as evidenced by the new bruise on my forearm. I was half back in the boat by the time the rest of our crew realized I'd been displaced; they were busy releasing the vang and trying to figure out how to drop the chute, which had blown through the foretriangle and was flagging to leeward at 25 or 30 knots. Pete, on the foredeck, got banged in the head by the pole as we got the chute down and the process took us several minutes, so when all was said and done, we elected to head for the mooring and lick our wounds, happy to all still be aboard with nothing more seriously damaged except our egos.

To start out with I would like to point out how important it is to make sure you are properly equipped for anything while on the water. I think the front of the boat learned the importance of carrying spray gear at all times even when the weather looks like a drifter!! Another big lesson was to keep your head out of the boat no matter what. Up the 2nd beat, I think we had our heads too in the boat dealing with equipment malfunctions and failed to notice the advantage going up the right. This let most of the fleet get leveraged out to the right but were still able to round in 9th. The last downwind run made it perfectly clear just how hard it is to sail a shields downwind in big breeze. Some well timed equipment failures on some of the leaders, we were able to pass boats until our own spin halyard broke. Cool heads prevailed and we controlled the situation and managed to round in around 6th. The last beat was short as usual and by slightly overstanding the boat layline we were able to pick off 2 boats at the finish and finish a solid 4th. A great race with some thrilling and exciting moments made for an excellent evening. This race really demonstrated to me the importance of communication and keeping your head out of the boat and on the course. Overall a great race sailed!!

Race Report, May 30

Race 4, 5/30/07 In Race 4 of the Spring Series we on 145 followed Andy Burton … and this time it paid off.

Before the race we were thinking that we had to get into Fort Adams and engage in the inevitable tacking duel that would ensue up the shoreline. The tide was flooding and the wind seemed solid on the shore. So we started in the pin end half of the line. To leeward was 107, 202, 226 and a bunch of others while 217 and 224 were to windward. We approached the harbor in good shape but then fell into a little hole and lost a lot of height, which meant we couldn’t tack and cross 217. Worse, it gave the group to leeward some leverage so that when they tacked they’d all cross us. So we bailed outta there early.

Now we were mixed up in the tacking duel up the beach. We called for water once or twice and had others call it on us once or twice. We felt we were going well and making gains but, in hindsight, we made the best gains offshore, outside of everyone. We should’ve been more aware.

We kept the tacking game going but it didn’t pay well for us and we rounded the windward mark somewhere around 15th-17th. Not good. On the first run we headed offshore and made some nice gains riding the current downwind. There also was clean pressure. We moved up to around 10-12 at the leeward gate and then banged the right side. Hard. It worked for 201, 166 and 188 on the first leg, who led the fleet of nearly 30 around the first mark. So we reasoned it could work for us on the second uphill. And it did. Nicely.

We rode port until 107, who we were following about 6-8 lengths behind, tacked to starboard. We followed suit and rode that tack all the way back to the shoreline where we met up with 217, who promptly tacked on us. Again. We rounded the 2nd windward mark in fifth, just behind 217, and then jibed offshore after setting.

Once again, we were in slightly more current out there and clean pressure and we got to the gate in fourth, ahead of 74 and 217. Up the final, short beat there wasn’t much going on and we held our position for a very satisfying comeback. Sure, it was a flier, but they’re deeply satisfying when they work. And there was no sense in following the clump up the shoreline.

But why does that strategy work? It seemed last week that there was better pressure over there, and it was slightly right of the starting line and left shoreline, which seems to negate the adverse current that was running. That certainly was the case for us on the second upwind. Also, you’re not tacking as much. As we all know, Shields hate to be maneuvered. But keep ‘em in a straight line and they move along nicely. So the combo of better pressure, better angle and fewer maneuvers helped move us up. And special thanks to Andy for leading the right way.

May 23 Race Report

Wednesday’s night Shields racing By: Dave Doucett This being my second time out Shields racing, I am not sure of the format of this race write up. Last night was also my first time trimming main on Jay Gowell’s Fox (232) so I spent more time looking at the main then at what the winning boats were up to--but I will give this my best shot. Night summary: The best time to be in Newport in my opinion is right after the Salve Regina students go home and before all of the summer residence from New Jersey start collating like an infectious disease. There is a small window that you can truly think, Damn it… I spent the whole winter here; this is my time to enjoy Newport, and it is. This past Wednesday we saw classic SSW 13 -16 kts current was starting to switch from ebb to flood and with 28 boats out. What a great time to be out on the water! On Fox it was definitely a learning experience. For example how to retrieve your spinnaker after it was speared by the end of the boom or how to sail a great first beat only to have it all go to hell at the mark rounding. For us, it was a frustrating night because we think we have good boat speed and a good crew; we just need to put it all together. Race One- Top 5 boats Pos Sail # 1 226 2 138 3 202 4 145 5 101 First start we were very late to the line (too deep in the box) and were very lucky to have a general recall. Second start the game plan was to do a Midline start, hold our lane all the way to the Fort Adam’s header, and tack. This did not happen. We lost our lane and worked out to the right side of the course, which seemed to work well for us at the time but it looked like all of the leverage was on the left shoreline. The error made was trying to get back over to the left. We had committed to the right and should have stayed (I think the winning boats stayed right?). By the time we got over to the left side four things went wrong: we were out of phase, we ended up having a bad tack, we had a really bad duck, and we concluded with a penalty turn. Boy I wish we stayed right! Downwind we hugged the shore and brought a good new puff with us catching some boats but we saw the boats that were sailing in the current lee of Rose Island looked like they were making out. A fairly uneventful mark rounding and a good last leg, but a pretty mediocre finish. Race Two- Top 5 boats Pos Sail # 1 224 2 107 3 202 4 76 5 201 Many thanks to Robin for getting the second race off so fast, and his team for the best-run race committee I have seen for weekday racing. We had a good midline start and a good lane to windward but ended up getting into a fight with the boat directly below us which ended with us both getting spit out the back. We did have a good lane and pressure to work with on the right and where able to stay decently in phase up the right side. It all came tumbling down when we got stuck on Starboard in a right phase puff, which was good, but we were not making the mark and did not have a lane to work back to the right. This fleet is very close and consolidates at each mark rounding. We need to think ahead more. We ended up getting a big wind shadow off the lead boats coming into the mark and a header. Somehow we “stuck it in there” and got around the mark thanks to the ebb tide but let 10 + boats pass us.
Downwind the game plan was to work over to the current lee of Rose Island. It looked like boats made out there on the last race. What ended up happening is we let one boat on our port hip screw the whole thing up. We sailed more than half the leg on the unfavored jibe, eventually we won the small tactical fight with the boat on our hip when we jibed on to the favored Starboard jibe but we lost the war by sailing down whole leg in unfavored current watching as boats on the shore side and Rose Island side make out. The mark rounding was a “doctor crash moment.” We let a boat on port push us too much to the left layline when we should have jibed on to Starboard and not let ourselves get pushed around so much. At the mark, we had a crew mix up with the pole and the human guy, which ended with about 3 feet of the end of our boom spearing the kite. I will be looking in the back page of Sailing World next month to see if anyone had a camera on the water on Wednesday. We maybe caught a boat or two on the last leg.
A very frustrating day because we felt like we had the speed and overall right game plan. We just did not put it all together and execute. The boat of the day had to be Tom and Chuck on 202 with two third place finishes nice job! This only being my second time out, I sure have tons to learn and am looking forward to see you all on the water next week.

It was a “Tale of Two Courses” or as one of my crew said RTRFC (Next time read the right *** chart.) None the less, it was definitely a great night to be on the water. SSW wind at 15+, pretty steady, ebb tide for a little chop to enliven the starting area, and an expected course (#65) down to mark 4 off Hammersmith. What could be better!

We (163) thought the pin was slightly favored and it seemed like most of the Fleet agreed. Since it was the first race of the season, we opted to try for a middle of the line safe start and intended to favor the right side of the course. Well the rust of the long winter layoff showed and the Fleet got the mandatory General Recall out of the way quickly. With India up, most put their adrenalin in check and we got a good start the next time around. This time we were actually closer to the boat, but got away reasonably clean. With most of the Fleet headed left, we were getting gassed and took a clearing tack to the right. What we found was clear air and great pressure. We also found a few friends, 201, 232, 138, and 101, among others. We thought we were a little up on the boats to the left, so we stayed right for a good stretch. True to form Andy Burton went to the far right corner, and then some. We went about half way and decided to rejoin the Fleet who were all coming out from Fort Adams. We managed to cross everyone to our left and crossed again coming back out on port. On to the lay line and we set up for a STARBOARD rounding, just like the 201 and 101, who were getting to the mark just ahead of us. (Did he say STARBOARD?) Andy, who went to the moon, still managed to get to the mark first and confirmed the right side advantage. We got rolled by 101, reaching in, and had to let two boats (74?? And 76??) round ahead of us. We all rounded to STARBOARD, as did lots of the boats behind us. (Did he say STARBOARD?) We then headed for Romeo, following 201, 232, and 101.

And that’s when the real fun began! Why was the rest of the Fleet going the wrong way! Now it’s not unusual to stay close to shore in an ebb, but the current wasn’t that bad, there was plenty of pressure across the course, no one likes to move the spin gear around, and they seemed to be going a lot farther than necessary. It was at this sublime moment that one of the crew reiterated an earlier comment made before the start. “That sure seems like a strange course and not usual for Robin; particularly for the first race.” That was quickly followed by a check the chart. Well this time a chose to look at a NEW chart and saw that course #65 was actually start-4p-8p-finish, which obviously made more sense. Not total sense, but more sense. As we calmly took down the chute and headed back to mark 4, we tried to figure out why most of the Fleet rounded to STARBOARD rather than port. (Did he say STARBOARD?) Baaah, Baaah, Baaah, Baaah! When we finally got back to mark 4, we joined the parade of rerounders. We unwound, rerounded, popped the chute and joined the parade, and essentially sailed down wind all the way to mark 8. The last leg was equally uneventful with good pressure across the course and minimal current.

So as I see it, there were four groups:

Those who properly sailed the wrong course (#65 from the outdated race chart of start-4s-Rs-6s-finish). The top finishers of this race were 201 and 232.

Those who properly sailed the correct course (#65 from the new race chart of start-4p-8p-finish). The top finishers here were 245, 138, and 166. There were also a number of boats in this group who sailed a longer race of start-4s-???-4p-4p-8p-finish.

Those who sailed a longer race of some of both courses; start-4s-???-4p-4p-8p-finish. We were in this group and there were no winners.

Finally there was one boat who sailed their own race of start-4_?-6p-finish.

And the winner is (I think) Dr. Shu. Congratulations Charlie and congratulations also to the other wily fox, Chris Withers, for his second (but he won’t read this because he doesn’t do email). See you all next week for more fun. The old chart has been permanently retired. Unfortunately, one race too late.
